Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

13.4K
Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

The Placebo Effect01:54

The Placebo Effect

6.8K
The placebo effect occurs when people's expectations or beliefs influence or determine their experience in a given situation. In other words, simply expecting something to happen can actually make it happen.

Decreased Body Temperature01:29

Decreased Body Temperature

1.0K
A decreased body temperature can occur in patients with hypothermia and frostbite. Heat loss with extended cold exposure overpowers the body's ability to create heat, resulting in hypothermia. Core temperature readings help classify hypothermia. Mild hypothermia is temperatures between 32 °C (89.6 °F) and 35°C (95 °F) and is caused by impaired thermoregulation. Moderate hypothermia is temperatures between 28 C (82.4 °F) and 32 °C (89.6 °F) caused by...

Masonry in Cold and Hot Weather Conditions01:21

Masonry in Cold and Hot Weather Conditions

345
In cold weather, masonry construction requires specific precautions to ensure mortar does not freeze before curing, as this can significantly weaken its strength and watertightness. Mortar temperature should be maintained between 60°F and 80°F to support proper hydration and curing. Below 40°F, mortar water must be heated, but should not exceed 120°F as high temperatures can reduce mortar's compressive and bond strength.
Other key practices include keeping masonry units...

Responses to Heat and Cold Stress02:45

Responses to Heat and Cold Stress

14.7K
Every organism has an optimum temperature range within which healthy growth and physiological functioning can occur. At the ends of this range, there will be a minimum and maximum temperature that interrupt biological processes.

Decreasing Function01:27

Decreasing Function

267
A decreasing function describes a relationship where the output consistently declines as the input increases. This means that for any two input values, if one is greater than the other, the corresponding output is smaller. Mathematically, a function f is decreasing on an interval I if for every x1 < x2 in I, f (x1) > f (x2). This type of behavior is visually identified on a graph that slopes downward from left to right. The nature of a function can be analyzed by calculating...

Area of Science:

  • Human Physiology
  • Nutritional Science
  • Thermophysiology

Background:

  • Roasted barley extract (RBE) is a traditional Japanese beverage with potential physiological effects.
  • Previous research indicated RBE containing cyclo(d-Phe-l-Pro) influences blood flow and skin temperature recovery in women.
  • The efficacy of RBE on skin temperature regulation in men was previously unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of RBE containing cyclo(d-Phe-l-Pro) on skin temperature in men and women under controlled cold air exposure.
  • To determine if RBE can prevent decreases in skin temperature in excessively air-cooled environments.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted.
  • Participants ingested either RBE or a placebo beverage and remained in a cooled room (25.5±0.5ºC) for 100 minutes.
  • Infrared thermography was used to measure left foot skin temperature every 5 minutes; paired t-tests analyzed the data.

Main Results:

  • The RBE group maintained significantly higher skin temperatures compared to the placebo group.
  • Overall, skin temperature changes after 100 minutes were -3.67±1.14ºC for RBE versus -4.59±0.89ºC for placebo.
  • RBE demonstrated efficacy in both male and female participants, with skin temperature changes of -3.65±0.64ºC (RBE) and -4.55±0.32ºC (placebo) in men.

Conclusions:

  • Roasted barley extract containing cyclo(d-Phe-l-Pro) effectively prevents skin temperature decrease in excessively air-cooled conditions.
  • The thermoregulatory benefits of RBE were confirmed in both male and female participants.
  • RBE represents a potential dietary intervention for maintaining body temperature in cold environments.
