Background:

Misalignment between career aspirations and educational pathways is linked to adolescent underachievement and adult employment instability.
Addressing this gap is crucial for positive youth development and future workforce preparedness.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate a brief, in-school intervention designed to enhance career decision self-efficacy and aspirational alignment among adolescents.
To determine the effectiveness of automated feedback and career information pamphlets in improving students' alignment of career and educational goals.

Main Methods:

A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent groups design was employed with 211 teenagers from disadvantaged areas in Western Sydney, Australia.
Participants completed pre- and post-intervention questionnaires assessing aspirational alignment and career decision self-efficacy.
The intervention group received immediate feedback and a career information pamphlet, while the control group received these materials post-study.

Main Results:

The intervention group showed significant improvement in the alignment of career and education aspirations.
Students in the intervention group demonstrated increased self-efficacy in gathering occupational information and selecting career goals.
Specifically, the percentage of students correctly identifying qualifications for their aspirations rose from 48.1% to 57.9% post-intervention.

Conclusions:

A brief, low-cost, in-school intervention effectively improves aspirational alignment between career and education goals in adolescents.
The intervention positively impacts key dimensions of career decision self-efficacy, particularly for students with initially misaligned aspirations.
This study highlights a practical strategy for supporting youth career development and mitigating future employment instability.
