The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

7.0K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

In statistics, several tools are used to interpret the data. Measures of central tendency represent the characteristics of the data, such as mean, median, and mode. Additionally, measures of variance like standard deviation and range are used to find the spread of data from the mean. Relative standing measures the distance between data locations. Commonly used measures of relative standings are percentile, z score, and quartiles.
Percentiles are a type of fractile that partition data into...

Data are individual items of information obtained from a population or sample. Data may be classified as qualitative (categorical), quantitative continuous, or quantitative discrete. Because it is not practical to measure the entire population in a study, researchers use samples to represent the population. A random sample is a representative group from the population chosen by using a method that gives each individual in the population an equal chance of being included in the sample. Random...

Global Climate Change

28.9K
Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Random and Systematic Errors01:20

Random and Systematic Errors

14.8K
Scientists always try their best to record measurements with the utmost accuracy and precision. However, sometimes errors do occur. These errors can be random or systematic. Random errors are observed due to the inconsistency or fluctuation in the measurement process, or variations in the quantity itself that is being measured. Such errors fluctuate from being greater than or less than the true value in repeated measurements. Consider a scientist measuring the length of an earthworm using a...

Systematic Sampling Method01:17

Systematic Sampling Method

13.0K
Sampling is a technique to select a portion (or subset) of the larger population and study that portion (the sample) to gain information about the population. Data are the result of sampling from a population. The sampling method ensures that samples are drawn without bias and accurately represent the population. Because measuring the entire population in a study is not practical, researchers use samples to represent the population of interest.
Systematic sampling is one of the simplest methods...

Summary

Condom availability programs (CAPs) in high schools do not increase sexual activity but improve condom use and reduce sexually transmitted infections (STIs). CAPs are effective in enhancing adolescent sexual health outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Sexual Health Education

Background:

  • High rates of HIV, STIs, and pregnancy among adolescents necessitate effective interventions.
  • Condom availability programs (CAPs) are being considered in high schools to address these concerns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the impact of CAP on adolescent sexual behaviors and health outcomes.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of CAP in high school settings.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review of peer-reviewed articles.
  • Inclusion of 29 articles from seven countries published between 1990 and 2017.

Main Results:

  • CAPs do not increase sexual activity, number of partners, or lower age of sexual initiation.
  • Increased condom uptake and use at last sex were reported in most studies with CAP.
  • Decreased STI symptoms and rates were observed in students with CAP; HIV data was inconclusive.
  • No difference in pregnancy rates was associated with CAP participation.

Conclusions:

  • Fears linking CAPs to increased promiscuity are unfounded.
  • Implementation of CAPs leads to increased condom utilization and improved adolescent sexual health.
  • CAPs are a viable strategy for enhancing sexual health outcomes among high school students.
