Long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) shows promise for HIV prevention in people who inject drugs (PWID). Most PWID found long-acting injectable PrEP acceptable, believing it overcomes daily adherence challenges.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Infectious Disease Prevention
- Substance Use Research
Background:
- Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective for HIV prevention.
- People who inject drugs (PWID) are at high risk for HIV infection.
- Long-acting injectable PrEP (LAI-PrEP) may offer benefits for PWID, but acceptability is unknown.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the perceived acceptability of LAI-PrEP among HIV-uninfected PWID.
- To identify potential benefits and concerns regarding LAI-PrEP in this population.
Main Methods:
- Qualitative study involving in-depth interviews.
- 33 HIV-uninfected PWID in the U.S. Northeast participated.
- Deductive thematic analysis of coded interview data.
Main Results:
- The majority of interviewed PWID perceived LAI-PrEP as acceptable.
- Participants anticipated reduced adherence barriers (e.g., forgetting, homelessness) with LAI-PrEP.
- Concerns included medical mistrust and potential effects on the "high" or "triggering" nature of injections.
Conclusions:
- LAI-PrEP has potential for HIV reduction among PWID.
- PWID perspectives on LAI-PrEP are crucial but underrepresented in research.
- Integrating PWID views is essential for effective implementation of LAI-PrEP strategies.
