Background:

  • The session rating of perceived exertion (session-RPE) is a widely used, practical method for quantifying internal training load (ITL) in athletes.
  • However, its construct validity has not been previously investigated in the context of dance training.
  • Objective measures like heart rate (HR) provide an alternative for ITL assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the convergent validity of the session-RPE method against an objective HR-based method for assessing ITL.
  • To determine if session-RPE is a valid tool for vocational dance students during professional dance training.
  • To explore potential variations in validity across different dance training modes.

Main Methods:

  • Ten vocational dance students (4 male, 6 female; age 20±1.16 yrs) participated.
  • Session-RPE and HR data were collected over 96 individual training sessions.
  • The Edwards' Training Load (Edwards-TL) method was used to analyze HR data, with correlation analysis employed to assess validity.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant, strong positive correlation (r=0.72, p<0.0001) was found between session-RPE and Edwards-TL.
  • Strong correlations were observed across all training modes: rehearsal (r=0.74, p=0.001), contemporary (r=0.60, p=0.001), and ballet (r=0.46, p=0.018).

Conclusions:

  • Session-RPE is a valid and practical method for assessing internal training load in vocational dance students.
  • While generally valid, some variations exist between session-RPE and HR-based ITL measures across different dance activities.
  • This finding supports the use of session-RPE in dance training for monitoring athlete load.
