X-ray Crystallography02:18

X-ray Crystallography

26.1K
The size of the unit cell and the arrangement of atoms in a crystal may be determined from measurements of the diffraction of X-rays by the crystal, termed X-ray crystallography.
Diffraction
Diffraction is the change in the direction of travel experienced by an electromagnetic wave when it encounters a physical barrier whose dimensions are comparable to those of the wavelength of the light. X-rays are electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths about as long as the distance between neighboring...

Balancing Redox Equations02:58

Balancing Redox Equations

61.9K
Electrochemistry is the science involved in the interconversion of electrical and chemical reactions. Such reactions are called reduction-oxidation, or redox reactions. These important reactions are defined by changes in oxidation states for one or more reactant elements and include a subset of reactions involving the transfer of electrons between reactant species. Electrochemistry as a field has evolved to yield sufficient insights on the fundamental principles of redox chemistry and multiple...

Energy Balance01:19

Energy Balance

1.2K
The human body gets energy from the three macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Energy is released when the chemical bonds in the organic compounds present in the food are broken down. The energy content of food is measured in kilocalories (kcal), defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. This value is determined by measuring the temperature change of the water surrounding a calorimeter after the complete...

Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

6.5K
The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...

Prediction Intervals01:03

Prediction Intervals

3.4K
The interval estimate of any variable is known as the prediction interval. It helps decide if a point estimate is dependable.
However, the point estimate is most likely not the exact value of the population parameter, but close to it. After calculating point estimates, we construct interval estimates, called confidence intervals or prediction intervals. This prediction interval comprises a range of values unlike the point estimate and is a better predictor of the observed sample value, y.

Summary

Intraoperative measurements of sagittal balance correlate with postoperative results after spinal fusion. A predictive algorithm helps estimate postoperative pelvic mismatch, guiding surgeons to achieve optimal spinal alignment.

Area of Science:

  • Spine Surgery
  • Orthopedics
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Accurate assessment of sagittal balance is crucial for spinal fusion outcomes.
  • Intraoperative measurements are often used to guide surgical correction.
  • Correlation between intraoperative and postoperative sagittal parameters needs further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To correlate intraoperative sagittal balance parameters with postoperative standing full spine X-ray results.
  • To develop a predictive algorithm for intraoperative estimation of postoperative spinal balance.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 49 patients undergoing thoracolumbar spinal fusion.
  • Measurement of sagittal parameters (pelvic incidence, lumbar lordosis, spinopelvic mismatch, sagittal vertical axis) from intraoperative and postoperative X-rays.
  • Statistical analysis including linear regression to develop a predictive algorithm.

Main Results:

  • Significant correlation found between intraoperative and postoperative sagittal balance parameters.
  • For prone patients, intraoperative lumbar lordosis averaged 59.9°, compared to 55.4° postoperatively (mean difference -4.5°, p < 0.001).
  • A predictive algorithm was developed to estimate postoperative spinopelvic mismatch in prone patients.

Conclusions:

  • Intraoperative measurement of sagittal balance parameters can reliably estimate postoperative standing full spine X-ray results.
  • In the prone position, surgeons should aim for intraoperative lordosis approximately 4.5° greater than the desired postoperative lordosis.
  • The developed predictive formula offers a practical tool for intraoperative calculation of postoperative pelvic mismatch.
