Sugarcane yellow leaf caused by Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (ScYLV) was identified in Peru for the first time. This study detected ScYLV in commercial sugarcane fields and germplasm, confirming its presence and spread.
Area of Science:
- Plant Pathology
- Virology
- Agronomy
Background:
- Sugarcane cultivars H 50-7209 and H 32-8560 in Peru have shown severe leaf yellowing for over 18 years.
- These symptoms affected a significant portion of the cultivated area, impacting major sugarcane varieties.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the cause of unusual leaf yellowing in sugarcane cultivars H 50-7209 and H 32-8560 in Peru.
- To determine the presence and prevalence of Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (ScYLV) in affected sugarcane populations.
Main Methods:
- Samples were collected from commercial fields and germplasm collections exhibiting yellowing symptoms.
- Tissue blot immunoassay and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were employed to detect ScYLV.
Main Results:
- ScYLV was detected in all 49 commercial field samples and 35 out of 49 germplasm samples.
- All six germplasm cultivars tested were infected with ScYLV, though severity varied.
- Greenhouse studies confirmed symptom development in infected sugarcane cuttings.
Conclusions:
- This study provides the first report of Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (ScYLV) in Peru.
- ScYLV is confirmed as the causal agent of severe leaf yellowing in the studied sugarcane cultivars.
- The virus is widespread in commercial fields and present in germplasm, necessitating management strategies.
