Mechanically strong and non-toxic chitin films were fabricated using epichlorohydrin (ECH) crosslinking. These breathable, biocompatible films show great potential for biomedical and packaging applications.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Polymer Chemistry
- Biomaterials Engineering
Background:
- Chitin, a highly abundant natural polysaccharide, offers significant potential for various applications.
- Developing mechanically robust and functional chitin-based materials remains an active area of research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To fabricate mechanically strong and breathable chitin films.
- To investigate the properties and potential applications of chemically crosslinked chitin films.
Main Methods:
- Chitin solutions were prepared in a NaOH/urea aqueous system.
- Chemical crosslinking was achieved using epichlorohydrin (ECH).
- Mechanical properties, non-toxicity, and water vapor transmittance were evaluated.
Main Results:
- Chitin films exhibited significantly enhanced tensile strength (139 MPa) and elongation at break (43%).
- The fabricated chitin films demonstrated non-toxicity through cell assays.
- The films displayed superior breathability compared to commercial products.
Conclusions:
- Chemically crosslinked chitin films possess exceptional mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and breathability.
- These robust chitin films are promising for diverse applications including biomedical uses, food packaging, and wound healing.
