Extraparotid Warthin's tumors (EPWT) are rare benign tumors found in lymph nodes outside the parotid gland. Conservative excision is an effective management strategy for these uncommon findings.

    Area of Science:

    • Head and Neck Surgery
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, commonly known as Warthin's tumor, typically arises in the parotid gland.
    • Extraparotid Warthin's tumor (EPWT) is an uncommon variant, originating in lymph nodes outside the parotid gland.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To present findings from a 22-year experience with extraparotid Warthin's tumors.
    • To analyze the incidence, clinical presentation, and management of EPWT.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 14 cases of EPWT over 22 years.
    • Analysis of patient demographics, tumor location, association with parotid Warthin's tumors, and clinical presentation.

    Main Results:

    • EPWT accounted for 8.0% of all Warthin's tumors (14 of 176).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Cases occurred in extraparotid lymph nodes in 13 patients (41-77 years old).
  • 23% of patients had associated parotid Warthin's tumors; 1 patient had a metachronous contralateral EPWT.
  • Conclusions:

    • Extraparotid Warthin's tumors are rare but distinct entities.
    • EPWT can be associated with parotid Warthin's tumors and present as cervical masses.
    • Conservative excision is the recommended management for EPWT.
