    Summary

    Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) significantly boosts thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in horses and ponies. This suggests TRH can be a valuable diagnostic tool for equine thyroid function assessment.

    Background:

    • Thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), regulate metabolism in horses.
    • The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis controls thyroid hormone release.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) on equine thyroid function.
    • To assess the potential of TRH as a diagnostic test for hypophysis-thyroid disorders in horses.

    Main Methods:

    • Adult horses (n=5) and ponies (n=6) received intravenous TRH (1 mg or 0.5 mg, respectively).
    • Serum concentrations of T4 and T3 were measured at multiple time points up to 24 hours post-administration.

    Main Results:

    • Serum T4 levels peaked at 4 hours post-TRH administration, increasing from a basal mean of 24.4 ng/ml to 48.2 ng/ml.
