Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

869
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Professional Values

10.6K
Nurses are responsible for caring for patients during birth, death, illness, and healing. Professional values guide the decisions and actions that nurses make in their careers. If nurses know the decisions and actions to take, providing patients with exceptional care is possible.
The values that are the foundation of the nursing profession are altruism, autonomy, human dignity, and social justice.
First, altruism refers to the concern for the welfare and well-being of others without personal...

The Professional Nurse

6.5K
Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:
Communication skills: These are critical characteristics, especially speaking and listening.

Higher Mental Functions of the Brain: Language

3.8K
Language is a system of communication that allows the expression of thoughts, ideas, and feelings. The brain processes language in both hemispheres.
Language formation and comprehension take place in the dominant hemisphere. The dominant hemisphere is responsible for understanding the meaning of spoken, written, or sign language, as well as the ability to communicate. For most people, the left hemisphere is the dominant one. The right hemisphere, then, gives tone and emotional context to the...

Higher Mental Functions of Brain: Learning and Memory

2.1K
Memory is one of the most vital higher mental functions of the brain. Memory is closely related to learning because it enables us to retain information and experiences from our past to use them in our present life. It also helps us to remember facts, events, and skills, such as riding a bike or swimming. There are two types of memory — declarative memory, which involves memorizing facts or events, and procedural memory, which enables us to remember how to do something like writing or...

Health Literacy01:21

Health Literacy

5.3K
Health literacy is an individual's or a community's capacity to comprehend, receive, read, and use relevant healthcare information and services. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines health literacy as the cognitive and social skills that determine the ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health. As a result, the WHO helps individuals manage long-term health concerns, participate in preventative...

Area of Science:

  • Global health and development
  • Mental health literacy
  • Professional development in healthcare

Background:

  • Continued professional development (CPD) is crucial in health and development sectors, especially in low-resource settings.
  • Disseminating information and skills in these settings faces challenges.
  • Improving mental health literacy and reducing stigma related to maternal mental illness are critical.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the Bettercare Maternal Mental Health book as a CPD tool.
  • To determine if the book improves knowledge and decreases stigma regarding maternal mental illness among care providers.

Main Methods:

  • 141 participants (social workers, nursing students, health professionals) studied the Bettercare Maternal Mental Health book.
  • Cognitive knowledge was assessed using a multiple-choice test.
  • Mental health stigma was measured using the Mental Illness Clinicians' Attitude Scale.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant improvement in participants' knowledge was observed across all six book chapters (p < 0.001).
  • No statistically significant change was found in participants' attitudes towards mental illness.

Conclusions:

  • The Bettercare book effectively enhanced mental health knowledge for care providers.
  • This distance learning format shows promise for CPD in maternal mental health.
  • Findings are relevant for CPD policy planners and curriculum developers.
