Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the influence of the menopause transition on body composition and weight.
  • To analyze changes in fat and lean mass relative to the final menstrual period (FMP).

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the longitudinal Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) cohort.
  • Assessed body composition using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
  • Employed multivariable mixed-effects regressions to model changes over time relative to FMP.

Main Results:

  • Fat mass and lean mass increased before the MT.
  • The rate of fat gain doubled, and lean mass declined at the onset of MT, continuing for two years post-FMP.
  • Weight increased linearly before MT and stabilized afterward, with no acceleration at MT onset.

Conclusions:

  • Accelerated fat mass gain and lean mass loss are directly associated with the menopause transition.
  • Despite body composition shifts, the overall rate of weight gain does not change significantly at the start of MT.
