    Summary

    This study found no significant changes in parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin (CT), or 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)2D] levels during the menstrual cycle in women. Calcitropic hormone concentrations remain stable throughout the cycle.

    Background:

    • Previous research suggested potential midcycle fluctuations in serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin (CT), and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)2D] in women.
    • The influence of cyclic ovarian steroid secretion on these calcitropic hormones requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of menstrual cycle hormonal shifts on serum concentrations of PTH, CT, and 1,25-(OH)2D.
    • To assess calcitonin (CT) reserve across different phases of the menstrual cycle.

    Main Methods:

    • Daily blood samples were collected from six women throughout their menstrual cycles.
    • Serum concentrations of PTH, CT, and 1,25-(OH)2D were measured using radioimmunoassays (RIAs) and cytoreceptor assays.

    • These findings challenge previous observations regarding midcycle hormonal changes in women.
