Short-term inverse occlusion and exercise improved vision in adult amblyopes. This non-invasive strategy enhanced visual acuity and stereopsis, with lasting effects observed up to one year post-treatment.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Neuroscience
- Vision Science
Background:
- Adult anisometropic amblyopia is a common cause of reduced vision.
- Traditional amblyopia treatments often have limited success in adults.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the efficacy of short-term inverse occlusion combined with moderate physical exercise for visual recovery in adult anisometropic amblyopes.
Main Methods:
- Ten adult anisometropic patients participated in six 2-hour training sessions over 4 weeks.
- Sessions involved inverse occlusion of the amblyopic eye and physical exercise (stationary cycling).
- Visual acuity, stereoacuity, and sensory eye dominance were assessed before and after sessions, with follow-ups up to 1 year.
Main Results:
- All 10 patients showed improved visual acuity (0.15 ± 0.02 LogMar).
- Six patients recovered stereopsis.
- Improvements were maintained for up to 1 year, suggesting physical activity's role.
Conclusions:
- A non-invasive training strategy using inverse occlusion and physical exercise shows promise for treating adult amblyopia.
- This approach offers a potential new avenue for visual rehabilitation in adults.

Adult stem cells
Adult stem cells are tissue-specific; hence, they divide to develop the tissue from which they originate. One type of adult stem cell is the epithelial stem cell, which gives rise to the keratinocytes in the multiple layers of epithelial cells in the epidermis of the skin. Adult bone marrow has three distinct types of stem cells:...
