  • Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a group of inherited neurological disorders.
  • Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are frequently observed in patients with HSP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the prevalence and urodynamic patterns of LUTS in HSP patients.
  • To characterize the management strategies for LUTS in this population.
  • To identify associated uronephrological complications in HSP patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical files of HSP patients followed between 1999 and 2016.
  • Collection and analysis of clinical, urodynamic, and radiological data.
  • Exclusion of patients with other neurological or urological conditions.

  • Urgency and voiding dysfunction were the most frequent LUTS (69.7%).
  • Incontinence (66.7%) and retention (57.6%) were common, with neurogenic detrusor overactivity in 80.7%.

Conclusions:

  • Systematic assessment of LUTS is essential in HSP patients due to high prevalence and risk of complications.
  • Improved management of urological dysfunction can decrease complications and enhance quality of life.
  • Early screening for urological issues in HSP is recommended.
