DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Computed Tomography

Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Virtual Work

1.4K
The principle of virtual work states that if a body is in static and dynamic equilibrium, then the sum of all the virtual work done by all external forces and couple moments for any given virtual displacement must be zero.
In static equilibrium, a body can experience an imaginary or virtual movement, such as displacement or rotation. The virtual work done by a force is equal to the dot product of force and virtual displacement in the direction of the force. When it comes to virtually rotating a...

Imaging Studies III: Gastrointestinal Motility Studies and Virtual Colonoscopy

403
This lesson explores three gastrointestinal imaging techniques: radionuclide testing, colonic transit studies, and virtual colonoscopy.
Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.
In gastric emptying studies, a meal's liquid and...

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that provides crucial insights into the body's physiological functions at a molecular level. It is an indispensable resource for diagnosing, staging, and monitoring various illnesses, notably cancer, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Medical Imaging
  • Surgical Simulation

Background:

  • Calcaneal fractures treated via the sinus tarsi approach present technical challenges.
  • Minimally invasive techniques aim to reduce surgical morbidity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if preoperative virtual simulation improves reduction and decreases complications in calcaneal fracture surgery.
  • To assess the efficacy of virtual simulation in sinus tarsi approach for calcaneal fractures.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-five patients with calcaneal fractures underwent sinus tarsi approach with minimally invasive plates.
  • Preoperative computed tomographic (CT) data were used for virtual surgical simulation.
  • Clinical and radiological outcomes were assessed, including operative time, fracture reduction, and functional scores.

Main Results:

  • Virtual simulation planning time averaged 30.7 minutes, increasing with fracture severity (Sanders classification).
  • Mean operative time was 86.7 minutes, with significant radiological correction of calcaneal dimensions and angles.
  • High functional outcomes were reported: mean American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society score of 88.7 (94.5% excellent/good) and low Visual Analogue Scale score of 0.8.

Conclusions:

  • Preoperative virtual simulation is an efficient tool for sinus tarsi surgery in calcaneal fractures.
  • This approach may lead to improved reduction and better clinical outcomes.
  • The technique demonstrated a low complication rate and high patient satisfaction.
