Concepts and problems in the study of the development of the nervous system

This introductory paper outlines the problems and concepts dealt with in a workshop organized by the German Histochemical Society on developmental aspects of the nervous system. Because this workshop also included demonstrations of techniques, it also includes a discussion of some practical problems in the study of the development of the nervous system.
