Typically these arise through events in which a gene or genes are mistakenly duplicated during cell division. Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review existing literature on the effects of caregiving stress on biomarkers.
  • To conduct a meta-analysis to quantify the impact of caregiving on immune and inflammation markers.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases.
  • Inclusion of 30 studies with 1,848 caregivers and 3,640 noncaregivers.
  • Meta-analysis using random-effects models to assess effect sizes for 86 biomarkers.

Main Results:

  • Overall small effect size (d = 0.164) for reduced immune function and increased inflammation in caregivers.
  • Slightly larger effect for dementia caregivers (d = 0.188).
  • Larger effect sizes found in studies with higher risk of bias; no significant associations in population-based studies.

Conclusions:

  • Caregivers exhibit small, statistically significant differences in immune function and inflammation compared to noncaregivers.
  • These associations are generally weak and of questionable clinical significance.
  • Concerns regarding selection bias in convenience samples highlight the need for population-based studies and longitudinal designs.
