    Summary

    Asthma patients experiencing nocturnal wheeze may find relief by understanding its link to sleep. This study found that bronchoconstriction, or airway narrowing, is significantly worse during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between nocturnal bronchoconstriction in asthma patients and specific sleep stages.
    • To determine if airway narrowing during sleep is linked to rapid eye movement (REM) or non-REM sleep.

    • Eight asthma patients with nocturnal wheeze and eight controls underwent forced expiratory maneuvers upon waking.
