Psoriasis patients suffer from poor sleep quality and have a higher risk of insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome. Early screening for these sleep issues is recommended for individuals with psoriasis.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Sleep Medicine
- Clinical Research
Background:
- Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
- Psoriasis can lead to significant sleep disturbances.
- The relationship between psoriasis severity and sleep quality requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze sleep disturbances in patients with psoriasis.
- To assess the impact of psoriasis on sleep quality.
- To explore the correlation between psoriasis severity and sleep issues.
Main Methods:
- Sixty patients with plaque psoriasis and 60 controls were enrolled.
- Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) measured disease severity.
- Standardized questionnaires assessed sleepiness, quality, insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome.
Main Results:
- Psoriasis patients reported significantly worse daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, and insomnia.
- A higher prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome was observed in psoriasis patients.
- Statistically significant differences were found in all sleep parameters between patients and controls.
Conclusions:
- Patients with psoriasis experience significantly poorer sleep quality.
- Psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome.
- Screening for sleep disorders in psoriasis patients is crucial and can be facilitated by simple tools.
