In the field of psychology, there are several ways to organize measurements of a trait, feature, or characteristic (i.e., variables). Qualitative data, such as ethnicity, can be tabulated into a frequency count to provide information about the proportion, as well as the variety of groups in a sample or population. Reliability and Validity

13.8K

Area of Science:

  • Online Education
  • Educational Psychology
  • Conflict Resolution

Background:

  • Electronic communication in online classrooms can cause misperceptions and misunderstandings.
  • Diverse cultural, experiential, and spiritual backgrounds can lead to unintentional hostility.
  • Incivility exists on a continuum from mild to aggressive, requiring varied interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the benefits of spiritual approaches in addressing online classroom incivility.
  • To differentiate between unintentional misunderstandings and intentional hostility in virtual interactions.
  • To establish guidelines for expected virtual classroom behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative analysis of online classroom interactions.
  • Review of existing literature on spiritual approaches to conflict.
  • Development of a framework for identifying and addressing incivility.

Main Results:

  • Spiritual approaches offer a framework for understanding and managing a range of online incivilities.
  • Distinguishing between misperceptions and genuine hostility is crucial for effective intervention.
  • Clear expectations for virtual behavior can mitigate misunderstandings.

Conclusions:

  • Spiritual strategies can effectively address online classroom incivility.
  • Interventions should consider the continuum of behavior and the role of diverse backgrounds.
  • Establishing clear virtual conduct norms is essential for a positive learning environment.
