Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Background:

  • Visual display terminal (VDT) use is prevalent in modern workplaces.
  • Prolonged VDT use can lead to eye strain and discomfort.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of blind working (BW) on interblink interval (IBI) and subjective symptoms in VDT users.
  • To assess the feasibility and benefits of incorporating BW into VDT work routines.

Main Methods:

  • 10 VDT users participated in a 60-minute data input task experiment.
  • Blind working (BW) time was measured by instructing participants to close their eyes when possible.
  • Interblink intervals (IBIs) and subjective symptoms (using visual analogue scale) were recorded and compared with normal working conditions.

Main Results:

  • Blind working (BW) time constituted 1.7%-10.1% of the observed VDT work.
  • While overall IBI did not significantly change, IBIs immediately following BW were significantly shorter.
  • Subjective symptoms such as dry eye, ocular fatigue, and blurred vision improved during BW periods.

Conclusions:

  • VDT users can effectively incorporate blind working (BW) into their tasks.
  • BW leads to shorter interblink intervals (IBIs) immediately post-BW and alleviates subjective discomfort.
  • Blind working (BW) presents a promising strategy for managing VDT-related eye strain and improving worker well-being.
