Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of the working alliance in stuttering treatment.
  • To assess the correlation between working alliance quality, client motivation, and treatment outcomes 6 months post-therapy.

  • Eighteen adults with stuttering participated in a multiple single-case study.
  • The Working Alliance Inventory-Short Version Revised (WAI-SR) and other validated scales measured alliance, motivation, and outcomes.

  • Significant positive correlations were found between the working alliance and client motivation (r = 0.781).
  • A strong association was observed between the working alliance and treatment outcomes 6 months post-therapy (r = 0.644).
  • Client-clinician agreement on goals and therapy tasks showed particular importance.

  • The working alliance is vital in speech and language therapy for individuals who stutter.
  • Agreement on treatment goals and tasks may be more critical than the client-clinician bond.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes is recommended.
