Global Climate Change01:50

Global Climate Change

28.9K
Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Empathy

10.1K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Summary

This study found higher fractional anisotropy (FA) in the genu of the corpus callosum (GCC) in women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This suggests the GCC may be involved in PTSD symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic mental health condition linked to brain alterations.
  • Research has primarily investigated gray matter changes, with limited understanding of white matter integrity in PTSD.
  • Previous white matter studies in PTSD yielded inconsistent findings due to methodological variations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the microstructural integrity of the corpus callosum in adult females with PTSD.
  • To explore the relationship between white matter changes in the corpus callosum and PTSD symptomatology.

Main Methods:

  • Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) was used to assess white matter integrity.
  • Sixty adult females diagnosed with PTSD and 18 trauma-exposed controls participated.
  • Fractional anisotropy (FA) was measured in the genu of the corpus callosum (GCC).

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher fractional anisotropy (FA) was observed in the genu of the corpus callosum (GCC) in the PTSD group compared to controls (p = .012).

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest that the genu of the corpus callosum (GCC) is associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Further research into this white matter pathway may inform improved treatment and prevention strategies for PTSD.
