Summary
This study explored how brain regions like the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) relate to anhedonia and empathy. Findings suggest fronto-striatal circuitry is key for experiencing pleasure, empathic happiness, and empathic cheerfulness.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychology
- Social Cognitive Neuroscience
Background:
- The reward circuit, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), globus pallidus, and nucleus accumbens, is linked to pleasure.
- Anhedonia, or reduced pleasure, is associated with damage to these reward circuit regions.
- The relationship between these brain areas and vicarious pleasure remains largely unknown.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the neural correlates of anhedonia and vicarious pleasure.
- To examine how brain activity in reward circuit regions relates to trait empathy and behavioral measures of anhedonia.
- To explore the neural basis of empathic happiness and empathic cheerfulness.
Main Methods:
- Pilot functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from 20 participants.
- Participants underwent an empathy induction paradigm using video clips to elicit empathic happiness, cheerfulness, or concern.
- A novel behavioral task, the "Happy Faces" task, was used to measure anhedonia during fMRI scanning.
Main Results:
- Globus pallidus activity during empathic concern predicted trait empathic cheerfulness (R²=26%, p=0.045).
- Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) activity during the "Happy Faces" task predicted task accuracy (R²=34%, p<0.05).
- Nucleus accumbens shell activity during the "Happy Faces" task predicted trait empathic happiness (R²=38%, p<0.05).
Conclusions:
- Fronto-striatal circuitry plays a significant role in the experience of anhedonia.
- Neural activity in these regions is associated with empathic happiness and empathic cheerfulness.
- These findings advance our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying pleasure and empathy.

Empathy
10.1K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

In 1928, a German botanist Emil Heitz observed the moss nuclei with a DNA binding dye. He observed that while some chromatin regions decondense and spread out in the interphase nucleus, others do not. He termed them euchromatin and heterochromatin, respectively. He proposed that the heterochromatin regions reflect a functionally inactive state of the genome. It was later confirmed that heterochromatin is transcriptionally repressed, and euchromatin is transcriptionally active chromatin.

Adrenergic Receptors: ɑ Subtype

Adrenoceptors are classified into α and ꞵ classes based on their potencies to catecholamine agonists. α-adrenoceptors show the following order of catecholamine potency:
Adrenaline ≥ Noradrenaline >> Isoprenaline
α-adrenoceptors are further divided into α1 and α2-adrenoceptors.
α1-Adrenoceptors: These receptors are located postsynaptically on the effector organs and cause constriction of smooth muscle mediated by activation of phospholipase...

Adrenergic Receptors: β Subtype
3.7K
β-adrenoceptors have varied sensitivities towards adrenaline, noradrenaline, and isoprenaline. The order of agonist potency is as follows:
Isoprenaline > Adrenaline > Noradrenaline
Neurotransmitter binding to these receptors causes activation of adenylyl cyclase resulting in increased concentrations of cAMP and modulation of calcium ion channels within the cell. They are further classified into β1, β2, and β3 subtypes.
