This study reviewed neurosurgical activity in neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) patients over 8 years. A specialized multidisciplinary center managed 1505 cases, including 43 surgeries, improving NF1 surgical condition management.
Area of Science:
- Neurosurgery
- Genetics
- Oncology
Background:
- Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is a genetic disorder with significant neurosurgical implications.
- Management of NF1 patients requires a multidisciplinary approach due to complex pathologies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review and present neurosurgical activity at a specialized, nationally commissioned NF1 center.
- To evaluate the outcomes and management strategies for neurosurgical conditions in NF1 patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of all NF1 Neurosurgical Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, clinics, and surgical procedures.
- Data collected over an 8-year period (2009 onwards).
Main Results:
- 1505 NF1 cases discussed at multidisciplinary meetings.
- 171 complex NF1 neurosurgical clinic appointments.
- 43 cranial and spinal operations performed on NF1 patients.
Conclusions:
- A supraregional multidisciplinary team enhances understanding and management of NF1 surgical conditions.
- Holistic patient care is achieved through direct care, specialist advice, and local unit liaison.
