    Background:

    • Rett syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder.
    • Electroencephalogram (EEG) findings are crucial for understanding brain function in Rett syndrome.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities in patients with Rett syndrome.
    • To investigate the changes in EEG patterns with advancing age in Rett syndrome.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 230 electroencephalogram (EEG) records from 44 patients diagnosed with Rett syndrome.
    • Classification and quantification of different EEG abnormality types.

    Main Results:

    • Nearly all patients with Rett syndrome exhibited abnormal EEG findings.
    • Rhythmical slowing (3-5 Hz) was the most prevalent abnormality (30 patients).
    • Spikes, sharp waves, and slow spike-wave complexes were also observed.
    • EEG abnormalities tended to decrease with age, with some patients developing ill-defined low-voltage records.

    Conclusions:

    • EEG is a consistent indicator of neurological dysfunction in Rett syndrome.
    • The observed decline in EEG abnormalities with age may correlate with the disease's natural progression.
    • These findings contribute to understanding the neurophysiological course of Rett syndrome.
