Tumor Immunotherapy01:27

Tumor Immunotherapy

1.9K
Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

In an underdamped second-order system, where the damping ratio ζ is between 0 and 1, a unit-step input results in a transfer function that, when transformed using the inverse Laplace method, reveals the output response. The output exhibits a damped sinusoidal oscillation, and the difference between the input and output is termed the error signal. This error signal also demonstrates damped oscillatory behavior. Eventually, as the system reaches a steady state, the error diminishes to zero.

Metal ions can be separated from one another by complexation with organic ligands–the chelating agent– to form uncharged chelates. Here, the chelating agent must contain hydrophobic groups and behave as a weak acid, losing a proton to bind with the metal. Since most organic ligands used in this process are insoluble or undergo oxidation in the aqueous phase, the chelating agent is initially added to the organic phase and extracted into the aqueous phase. The metal-ligand complex is...

Overview of Advanced Functional Groups

29.7K

Functional groups are groups of atoms with specific chemical properties that occur within organic molecules and are sometimes denoted as “R”. Functional groups can “functionalize” a compound by enabling it to adopt different physical and chemical properties.
Types of Advanced Functional Groups
The table below summarizes some of the major functional groups in organic chemistry.

First Order Systems

First-order systems, such as RC circuits, are foundational in understanding dynamic systems due to their straightforward input-output relationship. Analyzing their responses to different input functions under zero initial conditions reveals significant insights into system behavior.
When a first-order system is subjected to a unit-step input, its response is characterized by its transfer function. By applying the Laplace transform of the unit-step input to the transfer function, expanding the...

A servo system exemplifies a second-order system, featuring a proportional controller and load elements that ensure the output position aligns with the input position. The relationship between these components is described by a second-order differential equation. Applying the Laplace transform under zero initial conditions yields the transfer function, showing how inputs are converted to outputs in the system.
By reinterpreting the system, one can derive the closed-loop transfer function, which...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatology
  • Medical Research

Background:

  • Advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) presents a significant treatment challenge with poor prognosis.
  • Metastatic cSCC has a low 10-year survival rate, especially with distant involvement.
  • Current treatments like platinum-based therapy have limitations due to toxicity, particularly in elderly patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current landscape of systemic therapy for advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
  • To highlight the limited evidence for systemic treatments due to a lack of prospective studies.
  • To introduce novel therapeutic approaches for advanced cSCC.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on systemic therapies for advanced cSCC.
  • Analysis of treatment outcomes and toxicity profiles.
  • Examination of recent FDA approvals for novel agents.

Main Results:

  • Traditional platinum-based therapies offer some efficacy but are often limited by toxicity.
  • Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors represent a less toxic alternative.
  • The anti-PD-1 antibody cemiplimab has been approved for advanced cSCC patients unsuitable for curative treatments.

Conclusions:

  • Systemic therapy for advanced cSCC remains an area with limited high-quality evidence.
  • Cemiplimab, an anti-PD-1 antibody, shows promise as a new treatment option for advanced cSCC.
  • Further research is needed to establish optimal systemic treatment strategies for advanced cSCC.
