Muscles of the Shoulder01:23

Muscles of the Shoulder

9.1K
The muscles surrounding the shoulder girdle, including the clavicle and scapula, primarily stabilize the scapula. This stable base allows other muscles to move the humerus effectively. Scapular movements often mirror those of the humerus and extend its range of motion. For instance, raising the arm above the head would not be feasible without simultaneous upward rotation of the scapula.

Nursing Diagnosis01:22

Nursing Diagnosis

3.9K
Following assessment, a nursing diagnosis is the next step in the nursing process. It begins after the nurse has collected and recorded the patient data. The purpose of diagnosing is to identify how the client responds to actual or potential health processes, identify factors that bestow or that cause health problems, the etiologies, and identify resources or strengths the individual, group, or community can draw on to prevent or resolve problems.
The nursing diagnosis focuses on evidence-based...

Documentation of Nursing Diagnosis01:10

Documentation of Nursing Diagnosis

1.7K
The nurse documents nursing diagnoses and enters them into the patient record. The identified patient's nursing diagnosis is either written out with a plan of care or entered into the electronic health record.
In some settings, data-driven computerized decision support systems are in place, allowing for more accurate nursing diagnoses. The database within one of these systems includes diagnostic labels defining characteristics, activities, and indicators for nursing. A nurse enters...

Formulating and Validating Nursing Diagnosis I01:26

Formulating and Validating Nursing Diagnosis I

3.7K
A nursing diagnosis is written when the nurse recognizes a cluster of essential patient data indicating health problems treated with independent nursing interventions. The standardized terminologies of a nursing diagnosis help nurses identify and treat patients' problems. Every electronic health record that uses nursing diagnosis must employ standard diagnostic terminology. Developing an efficient, individualized care plan begins with accurate nursing diagnoses.
There are thirteen domains...

Cranial Bones: Superior and Posterior View01:14

Cranial Bones: Superior and Posterior View

5.1K
The superior view of the cranium shows the frontal and paired parietal bones.
The frontal bone is the single bone that forms the forehead. At its anterior midline, between the eyebrows, there is a slight depression called the glabella. The frontal bone also forms the supraorbital margin of the orbit. Near the middle of this margin is the supraorbital foramen, the opening that provides passage for a sensory nerve to the forehead. The frontal bone is thickened just above each supraorbital margin,...

Diabetes: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Complications

2.3K
For most patients, experiencing several weeks of polyuria, polydipsia, fatigue, and significant weight loss may indicate the presence of diabetes. Furthermore, adults displaying the phenotypic appearance of type 2 diabetes (particularly those who are obese and not initially insulin-requiring), may have islet cell autoantibodies, suggesting autoimmune-mediated β cell destruction and a diagnosis of latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA). The categorization of glucose homeostasis is...

Summary

Posterior shoulder dislocation is frequently missed, delaying treatment and causing persistent pain and limited motion. Early diagnosis via X-ray or CT scan is crucial for effective management of this traumatic injury.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Radiology
  • Sports Medicine

Background:

  • Posterior shoulder dislocation is an uncommon but significant injury following trauma.
  • Delayed diagnosis leads to chronic pain, restricted range of motion, and poorer outcomes.

Observation:

  • Conventional X-ray is the primary diagnostic tool for posterior shoulder dislocation.
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scans are indicated for persistent symptoms or complex cases.
  • Two cases of chronic posterior shoulder dislocation are presented, treated differently based on chronicity and patient factors.

Findings:

  • Early recognition and prompt diagnosis are essential for successful treatment of posterior shoulder dislocations.
  • The management strategy for posterior shoulder dislocation should be tailored to individual patient factors, including injury duration and age.

Implications:

  • Increased clinical awareness can improve the diagnostic rate of posterior shoulder dislocations.
  • Timely and appropriate treatment can mitigate long-term morbidity associated with missed posterior shoulder dislocations.
  • This case series emphasizes the need for a high index of suspicion for posterior shoulder dislocation in patients with persistent shoulder complaints after trauma.
