    Summary

    Lower thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) levels in pregnant women may predict miscarriage. This finding was more significant than human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) levels for predicting spontaneous abortion.

    Background:

    • Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in pregnancy.
    • Thyroid-binding globulin (TBG) is a key protein in thyroid hormone transport.
    • Pregnancy-related changes in thyroid function are well-documented, but their association with miscarriage requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate thyroid hormone profiles in pregnant women experiencing miscarriages.
    • To compare thyroid component levels between women with spontaneous abortions and normal pregnancies.
    • To determine the predictive value of thyroid-binding globulin (TBG) for spontaneous abortion.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurement of TBG, TBPA, T4, free T4, T3, and TSH in 144 euthyroid pregnant women with miscarriages.
    • Analysis of thyroid components and HCG in 18 aborting women using early pregnancy blood samples.

    • Significantly lower TBG values were observed in the spontaneously aborting group compared to normal pregnancies.

    • Reduced levels of thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) are associated with an increased risk of spontaneous abortion.
    • TBG may serve as a more sensitive biomarker for predicting miscarriage than HCG.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms linking low TBG to pregnancy loss.
