Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and long-term natural progression of gallbladder polyps.
  • To analyze changes in polyp number, size, and shape over an eleven-year period.

Main Methods:

  • A random sample of 413 subjects (aged 29-75) underwent abdominal ultrasound in 2002 and again in 2013.
  • Standardized questionnaires and anthropometric data collection were employed during both study periods.

Main Results:

  • Gallbladder polyp prevalence increased from 6.1% in 2002 to 12.1% in 2013.
  • New polyps developed in 8.7% of subjects; 51.9% of existing polyps persisted.
  • Changes in polyp size and shape were observed, with mean size decreasing from 4.7mm to 4.0mm.
