A new tip reinforcement flap technique effectively strengthens the middle crura in rhinoplasty, improving nasal tip projection and definition. This method addresses middle crural deficiency and weakness, offering enhanced stability and aesthetic outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Plastic Surgery
- Rhinoplasty Techniques
- Facial Plastic Surgery
Background:
- Middle crura support deficiency and short middle crura can lead to poor nasal tip definition and projection.
- These anatomical variations can result in a flattened nasal tip appearance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effectiveness of a novel tip reinforcement flap technique.
- To strengthen the middle crura and achieve improved nasal tip projection and definition.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 29 patients undergoing primary open-approach rhinoplasty were included.
- The technique involved using cartilage flaps from the lateral crura as medial crura-based flaps.
- Tip reinforcement flaps were utilized to augment the middle crura.
Main Results:
- Significant improvements were observed in nasal tip length (P=0.0214) and nasolabial angle (P=0.0344).
- The technique provided enhanced strengthening, support, definition, projection, and stability to the nasal tip.
- Nasal projection ratio showed a trend towards improvement (P=0.4347).
Conclusions:
- The tip reinforcement flap technique is advantageous for patients with middle crural deficiency or weakness.
- It offers improved nasal tip projection, stabilization, and definition while minimizing complications associated with traditional grafts.
- The technique effectively addresses nostril-lobular disproportion and conceals grafted material.
