Dissociative Disorders01:27

Dissociative Disorders

520
Dissociative disorders represent complex psychological conditions characterized by disruptions in consciousness, memory, identity, or perception. These disruptions cause individuals to experience a disconnection from their thoughts, emotions, and memories. The phenomenon is not merely an occasional lapse in attention but a profound alteration in mental functioning that can severely impact daily life.

Diabetes: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Complications

2.3K
For most patients, experiencing several weeks of polyuria, polydipsia, fatigue, and significant weight loss may indicate the presence of diabetes. Furthermore, adults displaying the phenotypic appearance of type 2 diabetes (particularly those who are obese and not initially insulin-requiring), may have islet cell autoantibodies, suggesting autoimmune-mediated β cell destruction and a diagnosis of latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA). The categorization of glucose homeostasis is...

Negative and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia

532
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia indicate a reduction or absence of typical behaviors and emotional responses found in healthy individuals, while positive symptoms reflect an excess or distortion of normal functioning.
Negative Symptoms
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia manifest as deficits in normal emotional and behavioral functioning, profoundly impacting daily life. Individuals with schizophrenia often display a flat affect, characterized by a near-total absence of emotional expression,...

Dissociative Amnesia

568
Dissociative amnesia is a complex psychological condition that manifests as an inability to recall personal information, often tied to traumatic or stressful events. Unlike general amnesia, individuals with this condition retain the ability to perform routine activities and procedural tasks, such as operating a phone or navigating public transportation, yet experience profound gaps in autobiographical memory. These lapses may encompass significant life events, such as suicide attempts or...

3.3K
Asthma, a common chronic respiratory condition, is classified considering the frequency and severity of symptoms alongside lung function impairment. Understanding this classification is essential for appropriate treatment and management. Here's a detailed look at the classification of asthma and its clinical features and complications:

Pleural Effusion Overview
A pleural effusion is the abnormal collection of fluid between the parietal and visceral pleura layers of tissue that form the lining of the lungs and chest cavity. It can occur independently or due to surrounding parenchymal diseases, such as infection, malignancy, or inflammatory conditions.

Summary

Fibromyalgia patients exhibit higher dissociative experiences, potentially linked to "fibrofog" and trauma. Antidepressant use may influence these dissociative symptoms in fibromyalgia.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Rheumatology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition with unclear causes.
  • Patients often report cognitive issues known as "fibrofog."
  • Dissociative disorders (DD) may contribute to "fibrofog" in FM.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between Fibromyalgia and Dissociative Disorders.
  • To compare dissociative experiences in FM patients versus control groups.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted.
  • Three groups were included: controls (C), rheumatic disorder patients (R), and FM patients (FM).
  • The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) was used for comparison.

Main Results:

  • Fibromyalgia patients scored significantly higher on the DES compared to control and rheumatic groups (p < 0.05).
  • FM patients on antidepressants showed lower DES scores than those not on medication (p < 0.05).
  • 5.71% of FM patients scored above 30 on the DES.

Conclusions:

  • Higher dissociative experiences in FM may correlate with trauma and victimization.
  • Antidepressants might modulate dissociative symptoms in individuals with fibromyalgia.
