  • Powerful moralizing deities and supernatural punishment appear after societies exceed one million people ('megasocieties').
  • Rituals standardizing religious traditions generally precede moralizing gods, indicating their greater role in early complexity.

Implications:

  • Moralizing gods are not essential for the initial evolution of social complexity.
  • These beliefs may help sustain and expand established complex empires.
  • Ritual practices, rather than specific religious content, appear more crucial for the initial rise of complex societies.
