Insights

Plasma microRNA-29a (miRNA-29a) is elevated in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). This finding suggests miRNA-29a may serve as a potential biomarker for assessing LVH in hypertension.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Biomarkers

Background:

  • Plasma microRNA-29a (miRNA-29a) is linked to myocardial fibrosis and cardiac hypertrophy in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
  • The association between plasma miRNA-29a and hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) remains uninvestigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between plasma miRNA-29a levels and LVH in hypertensive patients.

Main Methods:

  • 168 hypertensive patients were classified into LVH (n=41) and non-LVH (NLVH, n=127) groups.
  • Echocardiography was used to assess left ventricular mass index (LVMI), interventricular septal thickness (IVSd), and left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWTd).
  • Plasma miRNA-29a levels were quantified using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).

Main Results:

  • Plasma miRNA-29a levels were significantly higher in the LVH group compared to the NLVH group (0.52±0.10 vs. 0.37±0.07, P<0.01).
  • Positive correlations were observed between plasma miRNA-29a levels and IVSd (R=0.459, P<0.01), LVPWTd (R=0.398, P<0.01), and LVMI (R=0.745, P<0.01).
  • Multiple regression analysis confirmed positive correlations between plasma miRNA-29a and IVSd (β=0.535, P<0.01), LVPWTd (β=0.085, P<0.01), and LVMI (β=0.806, P<0.01) after adjustments.

Conclusions:

  • Plasma miRNA-29a levels are positively associated with LVH in hypertensive patients.
  • Further research is needed to determine if miRNA-29a can be utilized as a biomarker for LVH assessment in hypertensive individuals.

MicroRNAs

MicroRNA (miRNA) are short, regulatory RNA transcribed from introns—non-coding regions of a gene—or intergenic regions—stretches of DNA present between genes. Several processing steps are required to form biologically active, mature miRNA. The initial transcript, called primary miRNA (pri-mRNA), base-pairs with itself forming a stem-loop structure. Within the nucleus, an endonuclease enzyme, called Drosha, shortens the stem-loop structure into hairpin-shaped pre-miRNA. After...

Association Areas of the Cortex01:21

Association Areas of the Cortex

Association areas are regions of the cerebral cortex that do not have a specific sensory or motor function. Instead, they integrate and interpret information from various sources to enable higher cognitive processes such as memory, learning, and decision-making. Some key association areas include the following:
Prefrontal Association Area: This area is located in the frontal lobe and is involved in planning, decision-making, and moderating social behavior. It connects with primary motor areas,...

Associative Learning01:27

Associative Learning

Associative learning is a fundamental concept in behavioral psychology, wherein a connection is established between two stimuli or events, leading to a learned response. This process is critical in understanding how behaviors are acquired and modified. Conditioning, the mechanism through which associations are formed, can be divided into two main types: classical conditioning and operant conditioning, each elucidating different aspects of associative learning.
Classical conditioning, also known...

Hypertension I: Introduction

Hypertension is a widespread, long-term medical condition where blood pressure in the arteries remains elevated. It is characterized by systolic blood pressure readings of 130 mm Hg or above or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) readings of 80 mm Hg or higher. Unmanaged hypertension poses significant health risks, making the distinction between primary (or essential) hypertension and secondary hypertension crucial, as their management and implications vary.Primary HypertensionPrimary hypertension,...

Hypertension II: Pathophysiology

Hypertension is a chronic condition in which the blood's force against artery walls is excessively high, posing risks such as heart disease. The condition's underlying mechanisms involve complex interactions among the cardiovascular, kidney, and autonomic nervous systems.Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS): This system significantly influences blood pressure regulation. When blood pressure decreases, the kidneys secrete renin. This enzyme transforms angiotensinogen, a plasma protein,...
