A woman with sigmoid colon cancer and an undiagnosed pancreatic mass underwent successful surgery. Postoperative diagnosis revealed colon cancer and nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, with no recurrence after chemotherapy.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- A patient presented with occlusive ileus due to sigmoid colon cancer.
- Initial management involved transanal stent placement to relieve the obstruction.
Observation:
- Further investigations identified a pancreatic mass with significant FDG uptake on PET-CT.
- Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) yielded inconclusive results for the pancreatic mass.
Findings:
- Laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy for colon cancer was performed.
- Histopathological analysis confirmed sigmoid colon cancer (Stage IIIa) and nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma.
- The patient experienced an uneventful recovery and was discharged on postoperative day 9.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of thorough histopathological examination for accurate diagnosis in complex cases.
- Multidisciplinary management, including surgical resection and chemotherapy, led to a favorable outcome.
- The successful treatment of both colon cancer and lymphoma demonstrates effective oncological and hematological collaboration.
