Once daily therapy for streptococcal pharyngitis with cefadroxil.

M A Gerber, M F Randolph, J Chanatry

    The Journal of Pediatrics
    |September 1, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

A single daily dose of cefadroxil effectively treats group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GABHS) pharyngitis, showing similar results to penicillin V. This cefadroxil regimen offers a convenient alternative for GABHS pharyngitis treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pharmacology
    • Microbiology

    Background:

    • Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GABHS) pharyngitis is a common bacterial infection.
    • Penicillin V is a standard treatment, but adherence can be challenging due to multiple daily doses.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of a single daily dose of cefadroxil compared to standard penicillin V for GABHS pharyngitis.
    • To assess treatment outcomes including bacteriologic eradication and clinical response.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized trial involving 196 patients diagnosed with GABHS pharyngitis.
    • Patients received either cefadroxil (30 mg/kg once daily) or penicillin V (250 mg three times daily) for 10 days.
    • Outcomes measured included throat culture results at 18-24 hours, clinical course, and bacteriologic treatment failure rates.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in GABHS isolation rates at 18-24 hours between cefadroxil (0%) and penicillin V (2%) groups.
    • Clinical responses were similar in both treatment groups.
    • Bacteriologic treatment failure rates were low and comparable: 2% for cefadroxil and 6% for penicillin V.

    Conclusions:

    • A single daily dose of cefadroxil is as effective as multi-daily penicillin V in treating GABHS pharyngitis.
    • Once-daily cefadroxil offers a potentially more convenient dosing regimen for patients.
