Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and patient satisfaction of using virtual reality in a PICU setting.
  • To explore VR as a tool to improve the experience of critically ill children.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, single-arm pilot study was conducted in a PICU.
  • Participants (3-17 years old) experienced 360-degree VR immersions via headset and smartphone videos.
  • Feasibility and satisfaction were assessed through participant and parent surveys post-intervention.

Main Results:

  • 100% of child participants enjoyed VR, with 84% desiring longer sessions.
  • 100% of parents confirmed their child's enjoyment and 100% enjoyed observing their child use VR.
  • 82% of parents reported that VR had a calming effect on their child.

  • Virtual reality is an innovative, easily administered, and enjoyable intervention for PICU patients.
  • VR subjectively calms pediatric patients within the often chaotic PICU environment.
