Background:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a global health concern, leading to significant morbidity and mortality.
  • Cervical cancer (CC) is a preventable outcome of HPV infection, necessitating effective health strategies for affected women.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To apply Meleis' transition model to identify barriers and facilitators influencing CC protective behaviors in women diagnosed with HPV.
  • To understand factors that inhibit or facilitate the adoption of CC-preventive actions among women with HPV.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive, correlational study design was employed.
  • Data were collected from 201 women diagnosed with HPV in Mexico using nonprobabilistic sampling.

Main Results:

  • Awareness of HPV/CC, attitude toward diagnosis, and cytological control were linked to CC protective behaviors.
  • Acceptance of HPV diagnosis was influenced by HPV carrier attitude, stigma, age, education, and diagnosis duration.
  • Knowledge of HPV, attitude toward diagnosis/control, and age directly impacted self-efficacy for CC protective behaviors.

Conclusions:

  • Identifying factors that inhibit or facilitate transition in women with HPV is key.
  • Increasing CC protective behaviors among women with HPV can decrease progression to cervical cancer.
