Chemical Formulas02:52

Chemical Formulas

61.1K
A chemical formula presents information about the proportions of atoms constituting a particular chemical compound or molecule, mainly using symbols of elements and numbers. At times other symbols, such as dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus, and minus signs, are also used. A chemical formula can be one of three types – molecular, empirical, and structural.

Ionic Compounds: Formulas and Nomenclature

86.4K
An element composed of atoms that readily lose electrons (a metal) can react with an element composed of atoms that readily gain electrons (a nonmetal) to produce ions through complete electron transfer. The compound formed by this transfer is stabilized by the electrostatic attractions (ionic bonds) between the oppositely charged ions.

Molecular Compounds: Formulas and Nomenclature

55.4K
Molecular compounds or covalent compounds result when atoms share electrons to form covalent bonds. Since there is no electron transfer, molecular compounds do not contain ions; instead, they consist of discrete, neutral molecules.

Experimental Determination of Chemical Formula

46.6K
The elemental makeup of a compound defines its chemical identity, and chemical formulas are the most concise way of representing this elemental makeup. When a compound’s formula is unknown, measuring the mass of its constituent elements is often the first step in determining the formula experimentally.

Automatic Processing and Automatic Social Behavior

237
Automatic processing refers to the cognitive operations that occur without conscious intent or awareness, playing a fundamental role in shaping social cognition and behavior. These processes enable individuals to navigate complex social environments efficiently by relying on mental shortcuts and pre-existing knowledge structures known as schemas. One of the most influential mechanisms underlying automatic processing is priming, which subtly activates mental representations through exposure to...

Summary

A new WCT Formula accurately differentiates wide complex tachycardias (WCTs) into ventricular tachycardia (VT) or supraventricular wide complex tachycardia (SWCT) using computerized ECG interpretation. This automated method shows high accuracy, aiding clinicians in distinguishing these critical arrhythmias.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Medical Technology
  • Electrocardiography

Background:

  • Accurate differentiation of wide-complex tachycardias (WCTs) into ventricular tachycardia (VT) or supraventricular wide-complex tachycardia (SWCT) is challenging with manual electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation.
  • Existing manual ECG interpretation methods for WCTs have limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel method for automated WCT differentiation using computerized ECG interpretation (CEI) software.
  • To create a WCT Formula for distinguishing VT from SWCT.

Main Methods:

  • A two-part study involving a derivation and a validation cohort of paired WCT and baseline ECGs.
  • Development of a logistic regression model (WCT Formula) using computerized measurements from ECGs.
  • Inclusion of WCT QRS duration, frontal, and horizontal percent amplitude change as predictors in the WCT Formula.

Main Results:

  • The WCT Formula demonstrated high diagnostic performance in the derivation cohort (AUC of 0.96).
  • In the validation cohort, the WCT Formula achieved 91.5% accuracy, 89.7% sensitivity, and 92.9% specificity for VT detection.
  • Key predictors included WCT QRS duration, frontal percent amplitude change, and horizontal percent amplitude change.

Conclusions:

  • The WCT Formula, implemented via CEI software, effectively differentiates WCTs.
  • Automated methods like the WCT Formula can enhance clinical accuracy in distinguishing VT from SWCT.
  • This approach represents a significant advancement in automated cardiac arrhythmia interpretation.
