Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate OSCE-based milestone assessment in anesthesiology residency.
  • To compare OSCE assessments with CCC milestone assessments.

Main Methods:

  • An annual OSCE event assessed residents (CAY0-CAY3) on patient care, professionalism, and communication skills.
  • CCCs semiannually assessed residents via clinical evaluations; data closest to OSCEs (±3 months) were compared.
  • 35 residents across three cohorts (2016-2018 graduates) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Both OSCE and CCC assessments demonstrated competency growth proportional to training duration.
  • CCC assessments showed grade enhancement in junior residents (CAY0-CAY1).
  • CCC assessments exhibited expectation bias in senior residents (CAY2-CAY3).

Conclusions:

  • OSCE and CCC assessments are compatible in reflecting longitudinal growth.
  • Deviations suggest OSCEs provide distinct information on resident performance.
  • Integrating both OSCEs and CCCs may enhance the reliability and validity of residency competency assessments.
