Summary

Understanding how others see things (perspective taking) is often incidental. This study found that quick thinking hinders complex social reasoning (level-2 perspective taking) more than simple observation (level-1 perspective taking).

  • However, indirect evidence suggests people often perform perspective taking incidentally.
  • This includes understanding what others see (level-1) and how they see it (level-2).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficiency of incidental visual perspective calculation in adults.
  • To differentiate the processing efficiency between level-1 and level-2 perspective taking under time constraints.

Main Methods:

  • Four experiments utilized indirect measures of visual perspective taking.
  • Time pressure was imposed to limit processing opportunities.
  • Process-dissociation analyses were employed to isolate perspective calculation.

  • Time pressure impaired level-2 perspective calculation but not level-1.
