Conventional imaging patterns struggle to classify cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). We propose a new dichotomous classification of "parenchymal" and "ductal" types for improved description and correlation of CCA imaging features.
Area of Science:
- Radiology
- Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Conventional macroscopic patterns have limitations in classifying cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) imaging features.
- Recent histopathologic advancements provide new insights into CCA carcinogenesis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a novel dichotomous imaging classification for cholangiocarcinoma.
- To enhance the description of underlying carcinogenesis and clinicopathologic correlations in CCA.
Main Methods:
- Development of a new dichotomous imaging classification system for CCA.
- Categorization into "parenchymal" and "ductal" types based on histopathologic concepts.
Main Results:
- The proposed classification is simple and easy to apply.
- It offers a framework to describe CCA carcinogenesis.
- It facilitates correlation between clinicopathologic characteristics and imaging patterns.
Conclusions:
- A dichotomous "parenchymal" and "ductal" imaging classification for CCA is proposed.
- This classification addresses limitations of conventional methods.
- It aids in understanding CCA biology and clinical presentation through imaging.
