Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

9.4K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

857
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Water and Mineral Acquisition02:34

Water and Mineral Acquisition

35.5K
Specialized tissues in plant roots have evolved to capture water, minerals, and some ions from the soil. Roots exhibit a variety of branching patterns that facilitate this process. The outermost root cells have specialized structures called root hairs that increase the root surface, thus increasing soil contact. Water can passively cross into roots, as the concentration of water in the soil is higher than that of the root tissue. Minerals, in contrast, are actively transported into root cells.

Persuasion Strategies01:52

Persuasion Strategies

43.0K
Researchers have tested many persuasion strategies, including the foot-in-the door and the door-in-the-face techniques, in a variety of contexts. Ultimately, the principles are effective in selling products and changing people’s attitude, ideas, and behaviors (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused01:27

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

483
Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Electric Field01:16

Electric Field

12.3K
Consider two point charges, each exerting Coulomb force on the other. It is possible to describe the Coulomb interaction via an intermediate step by defining a new physical quantity called the electric field.
In the new picture, imagine that the first charge sets up an electric field independent of all other charges in the universe. When another charge comes in its vicinity, the second charge experiences an electric force depending on the electric field at that point. The source charge does not...

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurology
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • Perimetry is a standard clinical test for diagnosing eye and neurological conditions.
  • Current perimetry methods are time-consuming (7-8 minutes per eye), leading to patient fatigue and reduced data quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a novel perimetry testing strategy, PASS (Perimetry Assessment by Sequential Strategy), that accelerates visual field estimation.
  • To improve the accuracy and efficiency of 2D visual field reconstruction in clinical settings.

Main Methods:

  • Developed PASS, a reinforcement learning-based strategy for perimetry.
  • PASS employs an adaptive selection policy to identify optimal locations for visual stimuli presentation.
  • The strategy reconstructs 2D visual fields from sparse observations, prioritizing patient-specific data and maximizing reconstruction quality.

Main Results:

  • PASS significantly reduces examination time by 30%–70% compared to state-of-the-art methods.
  • The strategy achieves more accurate 2D visual field reconstructions.
  • PASS demonstrates patient-specific and non-greedy adaptive testing.

Conclusions:

  • PASS offers a more efficient and accurate approach to visual field testing.
  • The reinforcement learning strategy optimizes perimetry by adaptively selecting test locations.
  • This innovation has the potential to improve patient experience and diagnostic capabilities in ophthalmology and neurology.
