Modified Boxplots00:57

Modified Boxplots

10.9K
A standard box and whisker plot informs us about the spread of the data in a given sample. One can identify the minimum value, maximum value, first quartile value, second quartile or median value, and third quartile.
However, the box plot does not tell the reader about outliers - values that lie far from the center of the data. We can modify the standard box and whisker plot to identify the outliers and visualize the actual spread of the data in a sample.
Initially, we calculate the adjusted...

Column Efficiency: Plate Theory01:10

Column Efficiency: Plate Theory

2.0K
Band broadening in a chromatography column is measured by its efficiency. This is determined by the number of theoretical plates (N). Theoretical plate theory states that a separation column consists of a continuous series of imaginary plates where solute equilibration occurs between stationary and mobile phases.
A higher number of theoretical plates signifies better column efficiency and improved separation capabilities. Plate height affects bandwidth and separation quality; it is inversely...

Electric Field of Parallel Conducting Plates

1.7K
Gauss' law relates the electric flux through a closed surface to the net charge enclosed by that surface. Gauss's law can be applied to find the electric field and the charge enclosed in a region depending on its charge distribution.
Consider a cross-section of a thin, infinite conducting plate having a positive charge. For such a large thin plate, as the thickness of the plate tends to zero, the positive charges lie on the plate's two large faces. Without an external electric field, the...

Fluid Pressure over Curved Plate of Constant Width01:12

Fluid Pressure over Curved Plate of Constant Width

2.0K
When a curved plate of constant width is submerged in a liquid, the pressure acting normal to the plate varies continuously both in magnitude and direction. Calculating the magnitude and location of the resultant force at a point is often challenging for such cases. One of the methods to determine the resultant force and its location involves separately calculating the horizontal and vertical components of the resultant force. This complex calculation can be simplified by representing the...

Steady, Laminar Flow Between Parallel Plates

828
Understanding steady, laminar flow between parallel plates is essential for analyzing and designing flow in narrow rectangular channels, commonly found in various water conveyance and drainage systems. The Navier-Stokes equations govern fluid motion and are generally challenging to solve due to their nonlinearity. However, simplifications are possible in certain cases, like the steady laminar flow between parallel plates. For this scenario, we assume steady, incompressible, laminar flow.

Fluid Pressure over Flat Plate of Constant Width01:05

Fluid Pressure over Flat Plate of Constant Width

2.4K
When a body is submerged in water, it experiences fluid pressure acting normal on its surface and distributed over its area. For better design structures, it is crucial to determine the magnitude and location of the resultant force acting on the surface. In the case of a rectangular plate of constant width submerged in water, the pressure increases with depth, resulting in a linearly varying trapezoidal pressure distribution from the upper to the lower edge of the plate.
The resultant force...

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Spinal Fusion Techniques

Background:

  • Occipito-cervical (OC) junction instability presents challenges in achieving stable fixation.
  • Current methods for OC junction stabilization are debated, necessitating novel approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a newly developed modified inside-outside occipito-cervical (MIOOC) plate system.
  • To assess the MIOOC plate system's feasibility for treating OC instability.

Main Methods:

  • A feasibility study involving nine patients (5 male, 4 female) with OC instability.
  • Treatment utilized the MIOOC plate system, with fusion levels ranging from occiput-C3 to occiput-C6.
  • Radiological and clinical assessments were performed to evaluate stabilization rate, safety, and efficacy.

Main Results:

  • The MIOOC plate system provided immediate internal stability for OC junction instability.
  • No complications, revisions, or screw pullouts were reported; one mortality occurred due to unrelated primary malignancy.
  • All patients achieved satisfactory bony union at a mean follow-up of 22 months, with no recurrent instability.

Conclusions:

  • The MIOOC plate system appears to be a safe and effective option for immediate OC junction stabilization.
  • Its multi-piece design facilitates easy implantation and improves bone-plate interface.
  • Further clinical studies are warranted to confirm long-term reliability.
