Fischer Projections02:18

Fischer Projections

16.4K
Learning to draw Fischer projections of molecules and understanding their relevance plays a crucial role in the visual depiction of organic molecules. A Fischer projection is a two-dimensional projection on a planar surface to simplify the three-dimensional wedge–dash representation of molecules. This is especially helpful in the case of molecules with multiple chiral centers that can be difficult to draw. Here, all the bonds of interest are represented as horizontal or vertical lines. While...

Energy to Drive Translocation01:37

Energy to Drive Translocation

2.7K
Mitochondrial protein import is powered by two distinct energy sources: ATP hydrolysis and electrochemical potential across the inner membrane. Newly synthesized precursors are bound by cytosolic chaperones of the Hsp70 family, which guide them to the import receptors on the mitochondrial surface. Utilizing the energy of ATP hydrolysis, Hsp70 chaperones transfer these precursors to the TOM receptors on the mitochondrial outer membrane.
Generally, polypeptides are unfolded by two distinct...

Different notations are used to represent the three-dimensional structure of molecules on two-dimensional surfaces. One of the most commonly used representations is the dash-wedge formula. The dashed wedges, solid wedges, and the plane lines indicate the groups situated behind the plane, coming out of the plane, and in the plane, respectively.
The organic molecules rotate across the single bonds leading to numerous temporary three-dimensional structures of varying energy known as...

M-Cdk Drives Transition Into Mitosis

6.4K
Checkpoints throughout the cell cycle serve as safeguards and gatekeepers, allowing the cell cycle to progress in favorable conditions and slow or halt it in problematic ones. This regulation is known as the cell cycle control system.
Cyclin-dependent kinases, or Cdks, work in concert with cyclins to control cell cycle transitions. M-Cdk, a complex of Cdk1 bound to M cyclin, is a well-known example of this coordinated control that drives the transition from the G2 to the M phase.
M cyclin...

Coordinates and Map Projections01:29

Coordinates and Map Projections

602
Coordinates and map projections are essential tools in accurately representing the Earth's surface for various applications, ranging from navigation to spatial analysis. The latitude and longitude coordinate system is a universally recognized framework for defining locations. Latitude specifies the distance of a point north or south of the equator, measured in degrees from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles. Longitude indicates a location's position east or west of the prime meridian,...

Continuing Care01:25

Continuing Care

1.9K
Continuing care describes the variety of health, personal, and social services provided over a prolonged period. The need for continuing care is increasing because people are living longer. Many people do not have families or others to care for them. Continuing care is mainly for patients who are disabled, functionally dependent, or suffering from a terminal disease. It is available within institutional settings or in homes. Examples include nursing centers or facilities, assisted living,...

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Quality Improvement
  • Organizational Learning
  • Improvement Science Education

Background:

  • Healthcare organizations face challenges in building capacity for quality improvement.
  • Children's Mercy previously invested in advanced training for leaders.
  • An organization-wide curriculum was developed to sustain and expand improvement efforts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and implement a comprehensive, organization-wide curriculum for continuous improvement education.
  • To establish a framework and program name (CQPI) for improvement science education.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed curriculum, specifically the Team CQPI course.

Main Methods:

  • A steering committee guided the development of the Continuous Quality and Practice Improvement (CQPI) curriculum.
  • A phased approach was used, starting with a project-based course (Team CQPI).
  • Evaluation included objective assessment, pre/post-testing, qualitative feedback, and project progress monitoring via the Team Assessment Score (TAS).

Main Results:

  • 297 participants completed 83 projects between 2012 and 2017.
  • Team Assessment Scores (TAS) improved from an average of 1 to 2.7 during the 4-month course.
  • Average TAS reached 3.5 (indicating improvement) at 12 months post-course completion.

Conclusions:

  • The developed comprehensive curriculum effectively drove continuous improvement.
  • Measurable changes in Team Assessment Scores reflect successful local improvement initiatives.
  • The CQPI program demonstrates a scalable model for enhancing healthcare quality capabilities.
