Blood groups and malignant melanoma.

Summary

Malignant melanoma patients with blood group A showed improved survival compared to blood group O. This association was more pronounced in females and in earlier stages of the disease.

Background:

Malignant melanoma is a significant public health concern.
The role of blood groups in cancer prognosis is an area of ongoing research.
Previous studies have suggested potential links between ABO blood groups and various cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between ABO blood groups and malignant melanoma incidence and survival.
To explore potential differences in survival rates based on blood group and sex.

Main Methods:

Retrospective chart review of 168 malignant melanoma patients.
Analysis of blood group distribution (A, B, AB, O).
Comparison of median survival times across different blood groups and sexes.

Main Results:

Blood group A was found in 39.9% and blood group O in 49.4% of patients.
Patients with blood group A demonstrated a significantly longer median survival (67.7 months) than those with blood group O (46.6 months, p=0.04).
Improved survival for blood group A was significant in female patients and in those with early Clark's lesions.

Conclusions:

Blood group A may be associated with a better prognosis in malignant melanoma patients, particularly females.
Further research is warranted to elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying this association.
Blood group typing could potentially inform prognostic assessments in malignant melanoma.
