Ecuador shows high thyroid cancer rates, especially in women, but with a low mortality rate. This study provides the first national epidemiological data for thyroid cancer in Ecuador.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Oncology
- Public Health
Background:
- Thyroid cancer is a globally prevalent endocrine neoplasia.
- Epidemiological data from Andean countries, including Ecuador, is limited.
- This study addresses the lack of national reports on thyroid cancer epidemiology in Ecuador.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present the epidemiology of thyroid cancer in Ecuador.
- To analyze the burden of disease associated with thyroid cancer in the country.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional, population-based analysis of thyroid cancer data in Ecuador from 2001 to 2016.
- Inclusion of variables such as mortality rates, patient demographics, geographical trends, and disease burden.
- Data sourced from the Ministry of Public Health, Vital Statistics Deaths and Births Databases, and the National Institute of Census and Statistics (INEC).
Main Results:
- Over 16 years (2001-2016), Ecuador reported 23,632 hospital admissions and 1539 deaths due to thyroid cancer.
- An average of 1477 cases and 96 deaths occurred annually.
- Annual incidence increased from 3 to 22 per 100,000 inhabitants; women were 5 times more likely to be diagnosed than men.
Conclusions:
- Ecuador exhibits one of the highest thyroid cancer incidence rates in Latin America, particularly among women.
- Despite high frequency, the mortality rate for thyroid cancer in Ecuador is relatively low.
- Further research into pathological variants and grading of thyroid neoplasia is recommended.
