Sign Test for Matched Pairs01:17

Sign Test for Matched Pairs

394
The sign test for matched pairs offers a robust method for comparing two paired samples, often for the effects of an intervention in one of them. This method is very useful in situations where the underlying distribution of the data is unknown. The test compares two related samples—often pre- and post-treatment measurements on the same subjects—to determine if there are significant differences in their median values.
To conduct the sign test, we first calculate the differences in...

Average Acceleration01:30

Average Acceleration

13.0K
The importance of understanding acceleration spans our day-to-day experiences, as well as the vast reaches of outer space and the tiny world of subatomic physics. In everyday conversation, to accelerate means to speed up. For instance, we are familiar with the acceleration of our car; the harder we apply our foot to the gas pedal, the faster we accelerate. The greater the acceleration, the greater the change in velocity over a given time. Acceleration is widely seen in experimental physics. In...

Average Power01:13

Average Power

1.0K
In practical electrical applications, the concept of time-varying instantaneous power is not frequently utilized. Instead, focus shifts to the more practical quantity known as average power. Average power is determined by integrating the instantaneous power over a specified time period and subsequently dividing it by that duration.

Average Velocity01:12

Average Velocity

22.7K
To calculate the other physical quantities in kinematics, we must introduce the time variable. The time variable allows us not only to state the position of the object during its motion, but also how fast it is moving. The speed at which an object is moving is given by the rate at which the position changes with time. For each position xi, we assign a particular time ti. If the details of the motion at each instant are not important, the rate is usually expressed as the average velocity. This...

Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test for Matched Pairs

489
The Wilcoxon signed-rank test for matched pairs evaluates the null hypothesis by combining the ranks of differences with their signs. It essentially tests whether the median of the differences in a population of matched pairs is zero. Since the test incorporates more information than the sign test, it generally yields more trustable conclusions. This test also does not require the data to follow a normal distribution, but two conditions must be met for it to be applicable: (1) the data must...

Average and Instantaneous Velocity Vectors01:12

Average and Instantaneous Velocity Vectors

8.6K
To calculate other physical quantities in kinematics, the time variable must be introduced. The time variable not only allows us to state where an object is (its position) during its motion, but also how fast it’s moving. The speed at which an object is moving is given by the rate at which the position changes with time. For each position, a particular time is assigned. If the details of the motion at each instant are not important, the rate is usually expressed as the average velocity v.

Summary

Unfamiliar face matching accuracy was low, even with multiple images or face averages. These methods, effective in labs, did not improve real-world photo-ID verification performance in live matching tasks.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive psychology
  • Forensic science
  • Human-computer interaction

Background:

  • Unfamiliar face matching is prone to errors.
  • Laboratory studies suggest multiple images or face averages improve matching accuracy.
  • Real-world applicability of these findings is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of multiple images and face averages in live, real-world face matching tasks.
  • To assess performance in a realistic photo-ID verification scenario.
  • To determine if lab-based improvements translate to practical settings.

Main Methods:

  • 1,999 participants completed two live face matching tasks.
  • Tested matching a single image against a live person.
  • Compared performance using four-image arrays and face averages versus single images.

Main Results:

  • Accuracy for single-image matching was 79.9%.
  • Multiple images yielded 82.4% accuracy, and face averages yielded 76.9% accuracy.
  • Neither multiple images nor face averages significantly improved live face matching performance compared to single images.

Conclusions:

  • Multiple images and face averages do not enhance performance in real-world live face matching.
  • Current photo-ID systems may not benefit from these advanced face matching techniques.
  • Further research is needed to improve the accuracy of live face verification.
