Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if a PRf CS impairs the learning of nonreinforcement in simultaneously presented stimuli.
  • To examine the effect of the PRf CS on the acquisition of conditioned inhibition.

Main Methods:

  • Rats were trained using a magazine approach paradigm.
  • Experiments involved extinguishing compound stimuli (PRf CS and continuously reinforced CS) and assessing extinction rates.
  • Conditioned inhibition was studied by pairing an inhibitor with either a PRf or continuously reinforced excitatory CS.

  • Extinction was slower for a PRf CS compared to a continuously reinforced (CRf) CS when extinguished in compound.
  • However, the extinction rate of one CS was unaffected by the reinforcement schedule of a simultaneously extinguished CS.

  • These findings clarify the mechanisms underlying extinction and conditioned inhibition in learning.
